JAN VAN EYCK'S PAINTING AND THE BRISTOL CONNECTION What's in a name! A bit of a mystery for many people when it comes to the Arnolfini, Bristol's art gallery housed on the two lower floors of the massive Bush warehouse on Narrow Quay. The city needed its own modern art gallery. But what to call it! Jan Van Eyck's The Marriage of the Arnolfini
painted in 1434, one of the masterpieces of Dutch art. It is a portrait of an Italian merchant with his bride and it now hangs in the National Gallery in London. The Bristol gallery needed an unusual, striking name....and Arnolfini was certainly that! The name stuck.
